Best (Fictional) Friends Forever

Aug 02, 2018 | Books, Movies and TV

On August 5th we honor the people who know us best, who have made us laugh, comforted us when we cry, and with whom we can have entire conversations without saying a single word: our friends. It’s Friendship Day, celebrated every year on the first Sunday in August, and whose history dates back to the 1950s, when it became a popular holiday in South American countries; in Argentina, dinner reservations need to be booked weeks in advance of the holiday.

To celebrate, we’re revisiting some of our favorite fictional friends…and shooting our real life ones a text to thank them for all they do.

Anne and Diana in the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery–instant friends and kindred spirits, Anne and Diana’s friendship spans decades; the two were able to overcome the whole “Anne accidentally got Diana drunk on wine” debacle and settle into a lasting relationship that saw them name daughters after the other.

Bridget, Carmen, Lena and Tibby in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares–one special pair of jeans connects four very different best friends as they grapple with love, death, and other life-changing events, and support each other as only four girls can.

Calvin and Hobbes–a boy and his (stuffed) tiger captivated millions of Americans while the comic was being published and today, it remains one of the most popular comics in our collection. And with good reason: it’s funny, snarky, and sweet.

Cher and Dionne in Clueless“This is where Dionne lives. She’s my best friend because we both know what it’s like for people to be jealous of us”.

Cory and Shawn in Boy Meets Worldthe beloved TGIF sitcom showcases one of our favorite comedic friendships. A rule follower and a rebel, a perfect suburban boy and a kid from the wrong side of the tracks–Cory and Shawn’s relationship is the most meaningful of the series.

Cristina and Meredith in Grey’s Anatomyforget McDreamy, McSteamy, and Burke; none of the romances on the show could possibly hold a candle to the friendship Cristina and Meredith have. They are the reason the phrase “You’re my person” has entered the lexicon.

Harry, Ron and Hermione from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling–a friendship that’s just…magical.

Lenu and Lila, from the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante–beginning with My Brilliant Friend, Ferrante captures a complex friendship that’s equal parts love and competition.
