A Special Treat For Our Teens

Aug 18, 2018 | News from the Director

It’s been a very busy summer for our library teens. Those in our Be Excellent at Middle School (BEAMS) program have been enjoying enrichment activities including musical theater, cartooning, cupcake wars, and wacky science, and the teens on our Battle of the Books team have been hard at work reading books and practicing trivia questions in anticipation of the county-wide competition in October.

A very generous library supporter is greatly impressed with all of their hard work and, anonymously, gifted these teens with a special afternoon: a sail on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.  The Clearwater does a superb job of educating people of all ages about our river, our ecosystem, our history and the science of sailing. I was lucky enough to sail with our teens and we not only had fun, but found it an enriching experience.

The weather was absolutely perfect for a day of sailing, and the teens raised the sail of the sloop, fished with a net, navigated the boat, and learned about the ecosystem and history of the Hudson River and Hudson River Valley. As you can see from their smiles, they had a fantastic time.

We can’t thank this anonymous library supporter enough for our one-of-a-kind experience.
