2021 Youth Media Awards

Monday morning in Chicago, at its first ever virtual Midwinter Meeting, the American Library Association announced its 2021 Youth Media Awards.

This year’s Newbery award winner for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature is When You Trap a Tiger, written by Tae Keller.

The Newbery committee also chose 5 honor books. These include, All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team, written by Christina Soontornvat, BOX: Henry Brown Mails Himself to Freedom, written by Carole Boston Weatherford, Fighting Words, written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, We Dream of Space, written by Erin Entrada Kelly, and A Wish in the Dark, written by Christina Soontornvat.

         

The Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children was awarded to We Are Water Protectors, illustrated by Michaela Goade and written by Carole Lindstrom.

Four Caldecott Honor Books also were named: A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart, illustrated by Noa Denmon and written by Zetta Elliott; The Cat Man of Aleppo, illustrated by Yuko Shimizu and written by Irene Latham & Karim Shamsi-Basha; Me & Mama, illustrated and written by Cozbi A. Cabrera; and Outside In, illustrated by Cindy Derby, and written by Deborah Underwood. 

The OPL Children’s Room owns all of these books, so stop by and grab one or put them on hold for one of 2020’s best reads!
